Description
Tanks fail from the bottom. It is the one part you cannot see, cannot easily inspect, and cannot repair without taking the tank out of service and cutting the floor out.
Soil-side corrosion is the dominant failure mode for aboveground storage tanks, and it happens in a place no routine inspection reaches. Meanwhile overfill – a completely different failure mode – has produced some of the most destructive incidents in the industry’s history. Buncefield was an overfill.
This course covers the three standards that address both problems, and it treats them as one discipline: keeping product inside the tank.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover the corrosion mechanisms that destroy tank bottoms, cathodic protection design to API 651, internal linings and coatings to API 652, overfill prevention to API 2350, and release prevention barriers and programme management.

THE INSPECTION INTERVAL ARGUMENT
There is a direct commercial case here. API 653 internal inspection intervals depend heavily on what protection is in place. A qualifying cathodic protection system, a qualifying lining, or a release prevention barrier can each extend the interval substantially – and a tank that stays in service is a tank that keeps earning.
